En Garde
Fencing is a rapid and dynamic sport where the goal is to strike your opponent with your weapon while avoiding their hits. The thrill, skill, and spectacle of fencing are truly captivating. Beyond the physical challenge, fencing requires strategic thinking and split-second decision-making, making it a mental battle as much as a physical one, often likened to "physical chess" for its tactical depth.
Rules
Fencing rules revolve around scoring points by striking an opponent with the weapon's tip within specific target areas of the body. Depending on the discipline—foil, epee, or sabre—valid target areas differ, with each weapon offering unique strategies and techniques. Fencers must remain within the boundaries of the planché, a narrow strip where bouts take place, and must adhere to strict conduct codes to ensure fair play and safety. Electronic scoring equipment detects valid touches, and referees oversee matches to enforce rules and resolve disputes.
